italy notes march 28
“It’s raining today so I have time to write. I slept in, made breakfast, and, most important, went out for cappuccino. It was really good. How can we live without cappuccino.” – March 28, 2011; Florence, Italy

italy notes march 31
“At lunch today the gentleman next to us gave us the rest of his bottle of wine. It was a very, very good wine, as opposed to the wine we had already finished. Then the restaurant sent over cheese and honey to go with it.” – March 31, 2011; Florence, Italy

“I’m very lucky because our coffee bar is only two short blocks away and it has two slot machines. Zoe, age one, helped em play and I hit a forty EURO jackpot. I made a lot of noise and all the Italians were happy for me. However, the Italian man next tome had to show me how to collect.” – April 11, 2011; Lucca, Italy

“Our main pastimes seem to be sleeping, napping, eating, and drinking cappuccinos.” – April 11, 2011; Lucca, Italy

“Today I painted allday long. I did a view of Florence that I am proud of. My painting table looks out on the courtyard of an old church from the 1200s.” – April 13, 2011; Lucca, Italy

italy notes april 27
“At 9:00 A.M. we strolled across Lucca to the 14th Century tower with the trees on top. It’s two hundred and eighty steps to the top with a wonderful view of the city. I do not want the job of watering the tower-top trees.” – April 27, 2011; Lucca, Italy

“I love the Leaning Tower.” (R.M.)

Fun Fact: From March 30th to April 24th 1970, Roger had his first one-man art show at Lawson Galleries in San Francisco, CA. The show featured Roger’s collection of about twenty acrylic paintings and seven or eight cast bronze sculptures he made in college.

Another Fun Fact: In 1972, Roger Morgan opened his own Art Gallery in Berkeley’s “Walnut Square”, where he sold enough art to pay the bills.

“I had a show of my Yosemite Watercolors from October 20th to November 17th. I was teaching full time, raising children, and managing all of our rental properties. Since I couldn’t keep the gallery open full time on my own, I decided to share the space with a woman who sold art from Guatemala.

“I was able to keep the gallery open for two more years, until I moved completely out of the space. I was glad to have the chance to own it, but I did not have enough time to paint. I closed the gallery in 1974.”

Watercolor Paintings – Strips Of Mountains

There’s an old adage that says there are no mistakes in art. Roger Morgan proves this to be true every year.

Roger paints hundreds of watercolors throughout the year. Most of them make it to the framing stage as they are; but others need to be cropped or manipulated in some way.

Roger is a big believer in recycling, so when he crops one of his watercolor paintings the removed pieces don’t go in the trash – they’re set aside to be used at a later time.

The removed pieces are cut into strips and laid out side by side. As the artist juices flow, Roger visualizes which watercolor painting strips can be placed together to create another one-of-a-kind painting.

Often times the resulting painting is a mountain landscape, as mountains are of great artistic inspiration to Roger Morgan.

The Mountain by Emily Dickinson

The mountain sat upon the plain
In his eternal chair,
His observation omnifold,
His inquest everywhere.

The seasons prayed around his knees,
Like children round a sire:
Grandfather of the days is he,
Of dawn the ancestor.

Did you know…..?

Mountains cover one-fifth of the earth’s land surface, and can be found in 75% of the world’s countries.

Mountains are on every continent and even under oceans.

Hawaii is at the top of a volcanic mountain in the Pacific Ocean. More than half the mountain is below water.
